EXZODUSMinistries
Walking people out of bondage — fed, clothed, housed, and made whole.
The Mission
“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.”
“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’”
Matthew 25:35–36, 40 (NIV)
These words of Jesus are the foundation of everything EXZODUS Ministries does. When we feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and sit with the prisoner, we are not doing charity from a distance — we are serving Christ Himself in the people right in front of us. This ministry was born out of lived experience: its founder has known hunger, has been the stranger, has needed help — and knows what it means when somebody shows up.

The Work
Whole-person outreach, the way Matthew 25 lays it out — meeting the need in front of us, and staying for the road after.
Feed
Real food for real hunger — meals and provisions for people who don't know where the next one is coming from.
Clothe
Clean clothes, given with dignity — because nobody should have to face the day in what they slept in.
House
Help toward shelter and a place to land — working to get people off the street and under a roof of their own.
Recovery
Whole-person recovery — mental, spiritual, emotional, and physical. Not a handout and a wave goodbye, but a walk: surrender, support, and a new life, one step at a time.
“Come as you are.”Each one reach one, each one teach one.

About the Founder
“When Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the covenant law in his hands, he was not aware that his face was radiant because he had spoken with the LORD. When Aaron and all the Israelites saw Moses, his face was radiant, and they were afraid to come near him.”— Exodus 34:29-30
Andreus “Moses” Washington didn't choose the name Moses — it was given to him. During 25 years in and out of prison, he gave himself over to God, and the people around him saw the change and started calling him Moses. He came out serving God, and he has been serving since.
He is an ordained minister — ordained July 13, 2025.
“I teamed up with God. It's the only way.”
EXZODUS Ministries grows out of his testimony and his 2023 book, HELP ME HELP YOU HELP US — REACH OUT TO RECOVERY!!!!! — a blueprint for whole-person recovery built on Matthew 25:35–36. His mission objective, in his own words: “to help others who actually want the help and not give up on those who refuse it.” He leads the ministry alongside UNYKQ DESIGNZ, his faith-based apparel brand in Phoenix, Arizona, whose giving pledge helps fund the outreach — after its first three years, 10% of profits goes to help people get fed, clothed, and housed.
My Testimony
“They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads.”— Revelation 22:4
From the Bottom, For His Glory
This is my testimony, and it is truth. The record below is my own criminal record. The scriptures are the Word of God, every word exact. The certificates are mine, earned with my own hands. All of this shows how God takes a man from the bottom and uses him for His glory.
Where I’ve Been — The Record
The Theft
In 1997, in New York, I was convicted of petit larceny — 59 days. In 2005, in Phoenix, shoplifting — 8 days in jail. In 2017, in Phoenix, shoplifting again — 1 day in jail. I was a thief.
“You shall not steal.”— Exodus 20:15
“Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with their own hands, that they may have something to share with those in need.”— Ephesians 4:28
“nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.”— 1 Corinthians 6:10
Jesus said, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”— John 10:10
“But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, ‘Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.’”— Luke 19:8
Jesus said, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”— Luke 12:15
The Drugs
In 1997 or 1998, I married my former wife. I did not know she had a drug addiction problem. At that time I did not have a drug addiction problem at all myself. Then one day she came to me and said, “If you love me, you’ll smoke this with me.” And I became a victim, as she had become a victim — to Satan’s whispers in the Garden of Eden. I bit the proverbial forbidden fruit. For God knew it was evil and He did not want us to partake in that.
“And the LORD God commanded the man, ‘You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.’”— God, Genesis 2:16-17
“Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, ‘Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?’”— Genesis 3:1
“‘You will not certainly die,’ the serpent said to the woman. ‘For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.’”— Genesis 3:4-5
“When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.”— Genesis 3:6
I felt like Adam at that point. I was to Adam as she was to Eve. And I had partaken just as he had.
In 2001, in Phoenix, drug paraphernalia — and a felony for drug transport and sell. I pled guilty. My probation was revoked, and I served 2 and a half years in prison. In 2002, in Mesa, another felony for drug transport and sell — 4 years in prison. In 2017, in Phoenix, dangerous drug possession and use — 2 years and 6 months. The drugs mastered me for sixteen years. The drugs had me homeless. Every time I got arrested I was homeless. And every time I was homeless, I got arrested. It was a loop. The loop is the wilderness, where people were stuck — they couldn’t see their way out, because they were blinded by their own sin.
“The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.”— 2 Corinthians 4:4
That’s why I was in and out of prison.
“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.”— 1 Peter 5:8
“idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions”— Galatians 5:20
“But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”— Revelation 21:8
“Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit,”— Ephesians 5:18
“‘I have the right to do anything,’ you say—but not everything is beneficial. ‘I have the right to do anything’—but I will not be mastered by anything.”— 1 Corinthians 6:12
“They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of depravity—for ‘people are slaves to whatever has mastered them.’”— 2 Peter 2:19
“Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has complaints? Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes? Those who linger over wine, who go to sample bowls of mixed wine. Do not gaze at wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup, when it goes down smoothly! In the end it bites like a snake and poisons like a viper. Your eyes will see strange sights, and your mind will imagine confusing things. You will be like one sleeping on the high seas, lying on top of the rigging. ‘They hit me,’ you will say, ‘but I’m not hurt! They beat me, but I don’t feel it! When will I wake up so I can find another drink?’”— Proverbs 23:29-35
The Street Life
In 1999, in Phoenix, I was convicted twice of prostitution — 15 days in jail, then 30 days in jail. The street had me.
“The evil deeds of the wicked ensnare them; the cords of their sins hold them fast.”— Proverbs 5:22
“Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body. Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.”— 1 Corinthians 6:18-20
“Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself? Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never! Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, ‘The two will become one flesh.’”— 1 Corinthians 6:15-16
“The Lord said to me, ‘Go, show your love to your wife again, though she is loved by another man and is an adulteress. Love her as the Lord loves the Israelites, though they turn to other gods and love the sacred raisin cakes.’”— Hosea 3:1
“Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little. Then Jesus said to her, ‘Your sins are forgiven.’”— Luke 7:47-48
“‘No one, sir,’ she said. ‘Then neither do I condemn you,’ Jesus declared. ‘Go now and leave your life of sin.’”— John 8:11
The Robbery
In 2005, in Phoenix, I committed armed robbery. I pled guilty. I served 6 years in prison.
“The LORD examines the righteous, but the wicked, those who love violence, he hates with a passion.”— Psalm 11:5
“But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear.”— Isaiah 59:2
“One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: ‘Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!’ But the other criminal rebuked him. ‘Don’t you fear God,’ he said, ‘since you are under the same sentence? We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.’ Then he said, ‘Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.’ Jesus answered him, ‘Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.’”— Luke 23:39-43
The Cycle
From 1997 to 2019 — New York to Phoenix to Mesa and back to Phoenix. Arrest, plea, jail, repeat. Trespassing, paraphernalia, theft, drugs, robbery. Twenty-five years, in and out, off and on, in and out of prison.
Jesus said, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.”— John 8:34
“As a dog returns to its vomit, so fools repeat their folly.”— Proverbs 26:11
“Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness?”— Romans 6:16
“I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.”— Romans 7:15
“For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing.”— Romans 7:19
I know I’m saying these things and they are true, and this is part of my testimony — but it’s also the truth, which is why people are stuck out there right now. Sometimes homelessness is a choice and sometimes it’s not. But people get stuck out there because they’re trying to escape the traumatic experiences of their past. The temper tantrums they didn’t get to throw as a child, they’re now throwing as adults.
As children, our minds are shut off from traumatic experiences, and then later on in life they start acting these out and they don’t know why. But if you get into rehabilitation and counseling, it pulls it out of you — and you and God will show you why you’re acting out. He will show you why you’re doing the things you were doing.
“Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”— Psalm 139:23-24
Because at that point in time you were blameless and you didn’t know any better, and now that you are older you started acting these things out, not knowing why, when, or how, or who — but it was known that your heart was broken. You weren’t mended. You were breaking.
“The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”— Psalm 34:18
“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”— Psalm 147:3
The Turning
I was sitting in jail awaiting sentencing. I had given my life to Christ right there in the jail before I got sentenced. I was changed. I sat in jail a year before I finally made it to the yard.
On June 18, 2023, in Safford, Arizona, I was baptized. The old man went under the water. A new man came up.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”— 2 Corinthians 5:17
“I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.”— God, Ezekiel 36:26
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”— 1 John 1:9
“Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord,”— Acts 3:19
“‘Come now, let us settle the matter,’ says the LORD. ‘Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.’”— Isaiah 1:18
“So he got up and went to his father. ‘But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.’”— Luke 15:20
“Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.”— Psalm 51:10
“We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.”— Romans 6:4

“Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost.”— God, Isaiah 55:1
Salvation
“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.”— Ephesians 2:8-9
“If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”— Romans 10:9
“Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.”— Acts 16:31
“he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit,”— Titus 3:5

“Let the redeemed of the Lord tell their story—those he redeemed from the hand of the foe,”— Psalm 107:2

“Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples.”— Psalm 96:3
The Inspiration
I read the book “The Cross and the Switchblade” — the story of Teen Challenge. David Wilkerson was a country preacher who read about gang violence and went to New York City — not to judge the gangs, but to reach them. He reached Nicky Cruz, a gang leader, and Nicky gave his life to Christ. Out of that came Teen Challenge, one of the greatest faith-based recovery works in the world.
After I had given my life to Christ, and I had seen so much, my eyes were open. I kept seeing all these youngsters coming in and out of prison — just this last time when I went in — and I was like, somebody’s gotta help these families out here. These children don’t know what they’re doing. I had read that book later in time — after everything had already changed. The book was just a confirmation for me. God touched my heart through it and showed me I wasn’t alone in the calling. I felt like the pastor in that book. I was already on the inside — since he couldn’t get in, I had to be the one. God had used me where the pastor couldn’t get in.
I also read “Rescued Not Arrested” — the story of Roger Munchian. His book came out before mine did, and I was writing my book when his book gave me inspiration. I seen his story and I had to read it. I read it in a jail cell — that one and the Teen Challenge book.
And here’s what only God could arrange: I was on the same yard with him. Incarcerated with the man, breathing the same yard air — and never met him. Then they sent us on, me to Indiana. Two convicts on parallel roads in the same walls.
His message is my message: rescued through the arrest, not by it. He met God in a cell, same as me. God took his mess and made it a message, same as me. His ministry runs with no paid staff — making a difference instead of a dollar — same refusal I made. He doesn’t categorize sins; neither do I. His vision was born inside; mine was too. Two convicts, two pastors — and Wilkerson the street pastor who walked toward men like us. That’s divine instruction.
The Rebuilding — The Proof
I did not just say I changed. I proved it, with my own hands:
- I wrote the book — “HELP ME HELP YOU HELP US — REACH OUT TO RECOVERY!!!!!” (2023).
- I studied the Word — Gospel Echoes Bible studies (2024), Emmaus Correspondence School (grades of 96, 97, 98), the American Bible Academy (2024), Lamp and Light Bible courses (94%, 96%).
- I became a Recovery Support Specialist — trained March 2024, credentialed August 2024 — and went back inside the prison at Safford, not as an inmate but as the one helping inmates, one-on-one and in groups. The state called me “an agent of change at his unit.”
- I completed HUSTLE 2.0 — Book One, with Honors (2024).
- I was ordained — Credentials of Ministry, July 13, 2025.
- I earned two college certificates — HVAC-R and Major Appliance Repair — from Eastern Arizona College, with a 3.73 GPA and an A in Business Ethics.
The Building — The Company and the Ministry
Then God gave me the work. I founded UNYKQ DESIGNZ — faith-based apparel, every piece drawn by my own hand. I start with prayer and scripture and let God guide me. Every piece is not just artwork. It’s a prayer and a scripture.
And out of the company, the ministry: EXZODUS Ministries — to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, house the homeless, and walk people through recovery. UNYKQ DESIGNZ feeds EXZODUS Ministries. After the first three years, 10% of profits goes to help people get fed, clothed and housed.
How to Run Your Business by the Book
I built the company the way the Bible says to build. I start with prayer and scripture and let God guide the art.
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters,”— Colossians 3:23
Every number exact, every weight accurate.
“The LORD detests dishonest scales, but accurate weights find favor with him.”— Proverbs 11:1
“Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much.”— Jesus said, Luke 16:10
And the giving was decided in my heart before there were any profits to give.
“Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops”— Proverbs 3:9
“Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”— 2 Corinthians 9:7
The business feeds the ministry, never the reverse. Separate books, faithful stewardship — building the company by the Bible.
I checked my structure against Dave Anderson’s book, How to Run Your Business by THE Book — and Anderson himself co-founded the Matthew 25:35 Foundation, which feeds, educates, and houses the destitute. Same verse, same assignment. Here is how it lines up:
Become a strong leader. Pray to think like Jesus, prepare before you’re in position, confess mistakes, set vision and values, hold yourself accountable, serve. My Bible studies, my RSS credential, HUSTLE 2.0 with honors, my ordination — all came before the company existed. This testimony is one long confession. The vision is written down. The books are exact.
Maximize your time. Spend time on what you do best, schedule around priorities, trust God with your time. I get up at 3:45 in the morning and build on my lunch breaks, prayer first. The system is still being built — and there’s no team yet to hand anything to.
Overcome pride. Anderson calls pride the number one cause of management failure. I was a beggar, a thief, a drunkard, and an addict. The name Moses was given, not chosen. I’m being led by the spirit — I’m just the pen.
Build rock-solid character. No white lies, keep commitments, go the second mile, no false impressions. I’m publishing my felony record voluntarily. My payments are calendared to the day. $4,435.48 to the penny.
Develop people skills. Genuinely care, listen more than you speak, share your story humbly, meet needs. We meet people where they are. Not where we want them to be. Come as you are.
Life-work balance. The spiritual and the mental are strong. But the shepherd who doesn’t rest can’t protect the sheep — even Elijah had to sleep before the journey. I’m watching this one.
Manage money by the Book. All money is God’s, give generously, avoid debt, pay what’s owed. The 10% was decided before any profits existed. I turned down the $10,000 loan. Everything paid outright. Every tax and license calendared.
Build your team. Hire prayerfully and slowly. No team yet — but the twelve articles of the bylaws already anticipate a board, and I pray first on every decision.
Lead through crisis. Twenty-five years in and out, addiction, homelessness — converted into a ministry blueprint.
I checked my life against David Wilkerson’s book, The Cross and the Switchblade — the Teen Challenge story. I read that book later in time, after everything had already changed. The book was just a confirmation for me. Here is how it lines up:
Obedience over comfort. Wilkerson was a country pastor who left it all for New York’s streets. I felt like the pastor in that book. I was already on the inside — since he couldn’t get in, I had to be the one. God had used me where the pastor couldn’t get in. He was called from the outside in; I was called from the inside out.
Prayer as the engine. His ministry was born in the prayer room, midnight to 2 a.m. Mine starts with prayer and scripture — my 3:45 a.m. is his midnight by another clock.
Love the unlovable. To Nicky Cruz, who threatened to kill him, Wilkerson said every piece of him would still love him. We meet people where they are. Not where we want them to be. Come as you are.
The Holy Spirit’s power over addiction. Addicts delivered in a single night by the Spirit, not by a program. My deliverance is the proof — and my work as a Recovery Support Specialist inside Safford, “an agent of change at his unit,” is the same work through a man who was chained himself.
Go to them. Street corners, not sanctuaries. Preach from the mountaintops, not behind closed doors.
Build something lasting. The Teen Challenge center, 1960 — holistic healing. EXZODUS Ministries is my Teen Challenge: its own books, twelve articles of bylaws, whole-person recovery.
No one is beyond hope. The most violent gang leaders in New York converted. I’m publishing my felony record as the evidence.
Personal sacrifice. He sold his TV and walked gang territory. I turned down the $10,000 loan and build on lunch breaks. Different currency — same surrender.
Love and respect. I read Love & Respect by Dr. Emerson Eggerichs while I was incarcerated, and I had received the love of Christ and found the respect for myself. The book hangs on Ephesians 5:33 — “However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband” — unconditional love, unconditional respect. “If you love me, you’ll smoke this with me” made love a conditional test — the opposite of agape. The Crazy Cycle ran my life for sixteen years: every arrest, every homelessness, around and around — the loop. But the Rewarded Cycle is my ministry’s model: serve whether it is returned or not — “to help others who actually want the help and not give up on those who refuse it.” And the framework goes beyond marriage, into every family: “somebody’s gotta help these families out here. These children don’t know what they’re doing.” “Broken hearts make broken homes; and broken homes make broken hearts.” Love and respect should be unconditional. Because it’s unconditional with God.
Five books, one story. Anderson gave me the business, Wilkerson gave me the streets, Eggerichs gave me the family, Munchian gave me the mirror — and my own book gave me the proof. Five books, five men — one God who touched all five of us, and this is what we have. One mission, one God. Different paths. Anderson teaches a businessman to run his company by the Bible. Wilkerson shows a pastor carrying the cross into the streets. Eggerichs shows a husband the way love and respect were meant to work. Munchian shows a convict rescued through the arrest, building a ministry with no paid staff. I am the man these books were written for — the addict the Spirit delivered, the prisoner the pastor couldn’t reach, the convict who shared a yard with the author and never knew, the husband who learned love too late and now teaches it, the businessman now building by the Book. And my testimony was already written in my own hand in 2023: “I Teamed Up With GOD, It’s the Only Way!!!”
The paths: Anderson — the boardroom path, a businessman running companies by the Bible. Wilkerson — the pulpit path, a pastor who left the comfortable church for the streets. Eggerichs — the family path, teaching husbands and wives love and respect. Munchian — the cell path, a convict rescued through the arrest. And mine — the cell path out the other side, into art and business. Five different roads. One direction.
Each man carried a mission. Anderson — the marketplace: teach men to run their business by the Bible. Wilkerson — the streets: carry the cross to the gangs and the addicted. Eggerichs — the home: heal marriages and families with love and respect. Munchian — the prisoner: go back inside for the men still in chains. And mine — the least of these: feed them, clothe them, house them, and walk them through recovery, the whole person. And all five roads intersect in one place — in one man. Every road crossed in a jail cell in Arizona. I am the man these books were written for. And from that crossing, the branches reach out: Teen Challenge branched into centers around the world, Munchian’s ministry branched back into the yards, and mine branches from the artwork into the ministry — each design, each sermon, a branch reaching somebody. One vine, many branches. Jesus said, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” — John 15:5 Jesus said, “He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.” — John 15:2 All five branches have produced fruit. “But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be.” — 1 Corinthians 12:18 “I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow. So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow.” — 1 Corinthians 3:6-7 Jesus said, “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last.” — John 15:16 One mission — God’s mission — being fulfilled.

For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”— Hebrews 4:14-16

It’s like the footprints in the sand. When you’re walking, but then there’s only one set of footprints — that’s Jesus carrying you. That’s the Comforter, the Healer, the Redeemer, the Intercessor, the Savior, and the Teacher.
All this shows how God takes a man from the bottom and uses him for His glory.
Moses
The Seal of God
In Ezekiel, God marked the foreheads of those who grieved over the sin around them — and the mark, the letter Tav, was written in the ancient script as a cross. In Revelation, His servants carry His name on their foreheads: “They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads.” — Revelation 22:4
The Name — Yod, Heh, Vav, Heh — holds the hand and the nail. Sealed, and known by name.
My Story
Given, Not Chosen
Created in the image of Christ, called from your mother's womb. “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them.” — Genesis 1:27 “The God who gives life to the dead and calls into being things that were not.” — Romans 4:17 “For he chose us in him before the creation of the world.” — Ephesians 1:4 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart.” — God, Jeremiah 1:5 “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” — 1 Peter 2:9
And yet the choices we choose have led us astray, like people who have sold their soul for the ways of the world. Jesus said, “What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?” — Mark 8:36
“Before I was born the Lord called me; from my mother's womb he has spoken my name.” — Isaiah 49:1
I didn't pick the name Moses. It was given to me.
The Bondage
I've been through the bondage — chains, prison, addiction, abuse, suffering, homelessness, all of it. I was a beggar, a thief, a drunkard, and an addict. I was blind in my sin. I was dead in my sin. “As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins,” — Ephesians 2:1 — as scripture reads. And so was I. I was dead in my transgressions and sin. So were we, until we give our lives to Christ. “You, Lord, brought me up from the realm of the dead; you spared me from going down to the pit.” — Psalm 30:3 Just as the pit couldn't hold Christ — “it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him.” — Acts 2:24 — it is impossible for sin and death to keep its hold on us, when we give our life back to Christ. Like the blind man Jesus healed, who said, “I was blind but now I see!” — John 9:25 Then the light has truly shone. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” — John 8:12 Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” — Mark 2:17, I found myself hiding from family and friends, and even from God — as Adam and Eve hid from God in the Garden of Eden after they ate from the tree He told them not to touch — the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. — Genesis 3, as I had eaten from the tree of good and evil in the world, as Adam and Eve had eaten from the tree in the garden. So I had tried to hide in the Garden of the world from my sin. Just as Adam and Eve hid, so do we hide. Or try to. God's been looking for us while we've been trying to hide from Him. Just as Jesus leaves the 99 to find the one, so He comes to find us. Jesus said, “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn't he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it?” — Luke 15:4 It's not that they didn't come looking for me — I was just nowhere to be found. I was even lost to myself. Like the people with Moses in the wilderness — they were supposed to be in there 40 days, but they wandered 40 years. “For forty years — one year for each of the forty days you explored the land.” — Numbers 14:34 Instead of 40 days in sin, it was 40 years in sin — so do we get lost in sin in the world, and can't find our way out. Without the Shepherd. The Guide. Jesus. I was so lost in my addiction that I didn't care who came looking for me, because I wasn't looking for them. I was drowning in the waters of the world in sin, where everybody was doing the same thing, and no one was looking for God. Like Peter, sinking, who cried out, “Lord, save me!” — and immediately Jesus reached out His hand and caught him. — Matthew 14:30-31 How many people actually reach out to catch Jesus's hand — to be saved and pulled from the waters of sin? The people who were looking for God weren't looking for me. But Jesus said, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” — Matthew 7:7, and that's how you know God is looking for us. The ones He gives the ministry to are the ones who look for us. They might not be looking outright, but as God waits for us, He sets people in places to wait for those who are lost as well. These are the watchmen. “I have made you a watchman... give them warning from me.” — God, Ezekiel 33:7 And the angels in heaven are “ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation.” — Hebrews 1:14 Jesus said, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few.” — Matthew 9:37
The Call
So God calls us to action. “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I. Send me.” — Isaiah 6:8
Those whose hearts He has changed, whom He has mended, whose lives He has touched — are called to the ministry, to reach out to those children and those lost people. It's like the fisherman's net — when Jesus says to cast your net out upon the waters. Jesus said, “Come, follow me, and I will send you out to fish for people.” — Matthew 4:19 Because it's not about me, it's not about us. Once we give our life to Christ, it's about the other person — the other people — the ones who still need to be saved and brought to Him. We are no longer sheep; we are becoming shepherds. And though Christ is the Chief Shepherd, we are the ones who bring the sheep to Him — because no one can enter through the gate but through Him. Jesus said, “I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved.” — John 10:9 “We have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain.” — Hebrews 10:19-20 Jesus said, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” — John 10:27 “Be shepherds of God's flock... And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory.” — 1 Peter 5:2-4 And this is His charge to every shepherd: Jesus said, “Feed my sheep.” — John 21:17
The Prison
I know what it means to be bound because I've lived it. Like the woman at the well — Jesus met her where she was, and He met me where I was. Jesus said, “whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst.” — John 4:14 Jesus said, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” — John 6:35 Right in the county jail, awaiting sentencing, I confessed my sins — “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” — 1 John 1:9 — and I gave my life to Christ right there in the jail before I got sentenced. I had already changed. Then I finally gave myself over to God — wholeheartedly, mentally, spiritually, emotionally, and physically. — John 4 Like Paul on the road to Damascus — struck down by a light from heaven, blind three days, then the scales fell and he rose a new man. “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?... I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.” — Acts 9:4-5 The people cry out in their bondage and no one hears — but God hears. “The Israelites groaned in their slavery and cried out, and their cry for help because of their slavery went up to God. God heard their groaning.” — Exodus 2:23-24 Jesus said, “For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” — Luke 19:10, that's when things changed. And after I came out of the cell, after weeks on end, people had seen me different and started calling me Moses. Not only that — after four and a half years, I came out of prison completely transformed, having given myself to God wholeheartedly, to become a minister and reach out to the people — creating EXZODUS Ministries. “They are surprised that you do not join them in their reckless, wild living, and they heap abuse on you.” — 1 Peter 4:4 I went in a human being and I came out a human being — but a changed one. That's how the name was given to me. I had to get rid of the old me to make room for the new me and let Christ save me. Just like the wineskin — Jesus said, “they pour new wine into new wineskins.” — Matthew 9:17 “He has torn us to pieces but he will heal us; he has injured us but he will bind up our wounds.” — Hosea 6:1 Like Job — stripped of everything, then restored. “If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: the old has gone, the new is here.” — 2 Corinthians 5:17 “Those who cleanse themselves... will be instruments for special purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work.” — 2 Timothy 2:21, as Moses struck down the Egyptian to save his fellow Hebrew, I had to strike down the old me to let Christ save me. Because no one can serve two masters — you have to be obedient to one or the other. We must choose whether we will serve self or Christ. The choice is ours. “Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes.” — Ephesians 6:11 And as the scripture says to put on the full armor of God, so I put on the full armor of God. I didn't come out serving the old me. I came out serving God. And I came through it changed forever, carrying the name Moses.
The Name
“Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; you are Mine.” — God, Isaiah 43:1
God told me: “I have a name for you that I have chosen.”
God has chosen us. Jesus said, “You did not choose me, but I chose you.” — John 15:16
God has a name for you that He has chosen. You won't know the name until His people call you by the name He has chosen for you. You won't know the name until it is spoken to you.
“You will be called by a new name that the mouth of the Lord will bestow.” — Isaiah 62:2
Jesus said, “I will give him a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to the one who receives it.” — Revelation 2:17
The Sending
Like Moses, I was sent back into the hard place — not to stay in bondage, but to lead people out of it. “If someone is caught in a sin, you who live by the Spirit should restore that person gently. But watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted.” — Galatians 6:1 Those who place their foundation in Christ shall never stumble, because those who build their foundation on Christ build on solid ground. “Do not let wisdom and understanding out of your sight... Then you will go on your way in safety, and your foot will not stumble.” — Proverbs 3:21-23 Jesus said, “Everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock... it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.” — Matthew 7:24-25 That's what recovery is: walking out of what held you, and walking into who can truly hold you. Walking out of bondage and walking into freedom.
The Mountain
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound. — Isaiah 61:1
I went up the mountain, and I came back down carrying something for the people. Not tablets of stone — artwork. Moses came down the mountain with the word on tablets of stone. I came down with the word written on the tablet of my heart — and not only the word, but scriptures and art. We are the ark of the covenant — the covenant of Christ is within us. “You are a letter from Christ... written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.” — 2 Corinthians 3:3 I start with prayer and scripture and let God guide me, and the artwork is what comes out. But it's not just the artwork. It's the scripture behind the artwork. Every piece is not just artwork. It's a prayer and a scripture.
The Mission
That's why I created UNYKQ DESIGNZ. God spoke to me to do this work. It wasn't a business decision — it was obedience. Each design is as unique as the individual wearing it, and each one tells a story built on faith, love, and hope.
I built the company the way the Bible says to build — how to run your business by the Book. I checked my structure against Dave Anderson's book, How to Run Your Business by THE Book. I start with prayer and scripture and let God guide the art: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters,” — Colossians 3:23. Every number exact, every weight accurate: “The LORD detests dishonest scales, but accurate weights find favor with him.” — Proverbs 11:1. Faithful with little before much: “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much.” — Jesus said, Luke 16:10. And the giving was decided in my heart before there were any profits: “Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops” — Proverbs 3:9; “God loves a cheerful giver.” — 2 Corinthians 9:7.
And the work doesn't stop at the shirt. After the first three years, 10% of everything goes to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, and house the stranger — because I've lived Matthew 25. I've been the hungry one. I've been the stranger. I know what it means to need. My servant heart came from being broken, homeless, addicted — with no help, no outreach, nothing. Seeing the hopelessness, the helplessness — and having been hopeless myself, and not completely helpless but choosing to be helpless — maybe that was God's calling to me: to walk that path, to understand that path, so I can go back out there in the new creation He created me in. “The God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.” — 2 Corinthians 1:3-4
Jesus said, “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me... Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” — Matthew 25:35-36, 40
Jesus is the great physician. He's the only one who can heal us from the inside out. “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” — Psalm 147:3 Jesus is the light, the way, and the truth. Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” — John 14:6 God is love, and love is the blueprint to our existence. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” — John 3:16 Jesus said, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” — John 13:34 So we meet the body — food, clothes, shelter — so we can reach the soul. Mental, spiritual, emotional, physical. The whole person.
We meet people where they are. Not where we want them to be. “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” — Romans 5:8
Jesus says to come as you are — and that's what we want people to do.
The Going Before
I go before you, as Moses went before the Lord — to get the resources to help those in need. Just as Jesus said, “In my Father's house are many rooms... I am going there to prepare a place for you.” — John 14:2
That's why EXZODUS Ministries exists: to walk people out of bondage and into freedom. “He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound.” — Isaiah 61:1
I checked my calling against David Wilkerson's book, The Cross and the Switchblade — the Teen Challenge story. I read that book later in time, after everything had already changed. The book was just a confirmation for me. Wilkerson was a country pastor who left it all for New York's streets; I felt like the pastor in that book. I was already on the inside — since he couldn't get in, I had to be the one. God had used me where the pastor couldn't get in. He was called from the outside in; I was called from the inside out. His ministry was born in the prayer room, midnight to 2 a.m. — mine starts with prayer and scripture; my 3:45 a.m. is his midnight by another clock. To Nicky Cruz, who threatened to kill him, Wilkerson said every piece of him would still love him. We meet people where they are. Not where we want them to be. Come as you are. Addicts delivered in a single night by the Spirit, not by a program — my deliverance is the proof. Street corners, not sanctuaries: preach from the mountaintops, not behind closed doors. The Teen Challenge center, 1960 — holistic healing. EXZODUS Ministries is my Teen Challenge: its own books, twelve articles of bylaws, whole-person recovery — mental, spiritual, emotional, physical.
I read Love & Respect by Dr. Emerson Eggerichs while I was incarcerated, and I had received the love of Christ and found the respect for myself. “However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.” — Ephesians 5:33. The Crazy Cycle was my sixteen-year loop — no love, no respect, around and around. The Rewarded Cycle is the ministry: serve whether it is returned or not — “to help others who actually want the help and not give up on those who refuse it.” And the framework goes beyond marriage, into every family: “somebody's gotta help these families out here.” Love and respect should be unconditional. Because it's unconditional with God.
Five books, five men — one God who touched all five of us, and this is what we have. One mission, one God. Different paths. Anderson gave me the business, Wilkerson gave me the streets, Eggerichs gave me the family, Munchian gave me the mirror — and my own book gave me the proof. “I Teamed Up With GOD, It's the Only Way!!!” We are called to be the face of Christ to the world. “For God, who said, 'Let light shine out of darkness,' made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God's glory displayed in the face of Christ.” — 2 Corinthians 4:6 We are called to be a light to the world. Jesus said, “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.” — Matthew 5:14 We carry the mind of Christ. “For, 'Who has known the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?' But we have the mind of Christ.” — 1 Corinthians 2:16 Wisdom crowns our head. “She will give you a garland to grace your head and present you with a crown of splendor.” — Proverbs 4:9 For Christ is the wisdom of God. “Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.” — 1 Corinthians 1:24 We bear the weight on His shoulders. “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” — Isaiah 9:6, We are His eyes to see the need and His ears to hear the cry. “The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are attentive to their cry.” — Psalm 34:15 And His eyes weep with those who weep. “Jesus wept.” — John 11:35, “He will wipe every tear from their eyes.” — Revelation 21:4, Our tongue is instructed to sustain the weary. “The Sovereign Lord has given me a well-instructed tongue, to know the word that sustains the weary.” — Isaiah 50:4 I speak for those who cannot speak. “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute.” — Proverbs 31:8 He has given us a new heart. “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.” — Ezekiel 36:26 We are the hands and the feet of Christ. And He breathed life into us. “Come, breath, from the four winds and breathe into these slain, that they may live... breath entered them; they came to life and stood up on their feet.” — Ezekiel 37:9-10 And underneath us are His everlasting arms. “The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms.” — Deuteronomy 33:27, “Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.” — 1 Corinthians 12:27 And by the grace of God, this body will be raised new. “But by the grace of God I am what I am.” — 1 Corinthians 15:10 “The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable; it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power; it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body.” — 1 Corinthians 15:42-44
And from that crossing, the branches reach out: Teen Challenge branched into centers around the world, Munchian's ministry branched back into the yards, and mine branches from the artwork into the ministry — each design, each sermon, a branch reaching somebody. So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow.” — 1 Corinthians 3:6-7 Jesus said, “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last.” — John 15:16 One mission — God's mission — being fulfilled.
And the Holy Spirit dwells within us. “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?” — 1 Corinthians 6:19
“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” — Psalm 139:14
And we are becoming Christ-like, transformed into His image. “And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory.” — 2 Corinthians 3:18
And we armor the body. “Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes.” — Ephesians 6:11 The helmet of salvation guards the mind. The breastplate of righteousness covers the heart. The belt of truth is buckled around us. Our feet are fitted with the readiness of the gospel of peace. The shield of faith is in our hands, to quench every flaming arrow of the evil one. And the sword of the Spirit — the word of God — is on our tongue. — Ephesians 6:14-17 God equips us with everything — after the armor, you are equipped with everything to fight the battle: “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” — 2 Timothy 3:16-17 “His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.” — 2 Peter 1:3 “Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.” — Hebrews 13:21 This is the work Jesus described: Jesus said, “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me... Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” — Matthew 25:35-36, 40 Though UNYKQ DESIGNZ is spiritual, it feeds EXZODUS Ministries — not the other way around.
What is freely given shall freely be received. Jesus said, “Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give.” — Matthew 10:8 Jesus said, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” — Matthew 28:19-20
I just want to shine like Moses did when he came down from the mountain — not with my own light, but with the light of having been with God. And I testify, as John the Baptist testified: “He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.” — John 1:7-8 For Jesus Christ is the light. “The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.” — John 1:9 And John beheld Him and declared, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” — John 1:29
The Benediction
Walking out of what held you. Into who can truly hold you.
God is the beginning and the end, the Alpha and the Omega. He's there before you and He's there after you. He's there when everybody else is gone. God's been waiting for us since the beginning. God's always been where He is. It's us who were never where we're supposed to be. God knew where I was the whole time. “I shall never leave you nor forsake you. You are Mine.” — God, Hebrews 13:5; God, Isaiah 43:1 God's been waiting. He's patient. “Be still, and know that I am God.” — God, Psalm 46:10, when we're at our lowest, and everybody else is gone, and everything else is gone — God is always there. He's been there. So when there's nothing else to turn to, we turn to God. But the question is: will you seek Him wholeheartedly? Or are you only seeking Him partially, just to get out of the situation? “The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.” — Proverbs 4:7 And Wisdom — who is Christ — says, “those who seek me find me.” — Proverbs 8:17 Father God is always there, picking up the broken pieces. Like the footprints — when you don't see Him beside you, that's when He's carrying you. So He's the only true one that can hold you. As Moses parted the Red Sea — the sea of the waters of the world of sin — to bring the people through, away from Pharaoh, which is the evils of the world. And the sea closed over the evil — the sea could be the blood that covers the evil. As God flooded the earth to wash away the evil, as the waters closed over Pharaoh's army, as we go down in the waters of baptism and the sin comes off of us and we are born anew in Christ in spirit — “we were buried with him through baptism... that we too may live a new life.” — Romans 6:4 — so the people are coming and being saved and brought to Christ. — Exodus 14
That's the story.

The Body of Christ
We are called to be the face of Christ to the world.
“For God, who said, 'Let light shine out of darkness,' made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God's glory displayed in the face of Christ.”— 2 Corinthians 4:6
We are called to be a light to the world.
Jesus said, “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.”— Matthew 5:14
We carry the mind of Christ.
“For, 'Who has known the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?' But we have the mind of Christ.”— 1 Corinthians 2:16
Wisdom crowns our head.
“She will give you a garland to grace your head and present you with a crown of splendor.”— Proverbs 4:9
For Christ is the wisdom of God.
“Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.”— 1 Corinthians 1:24
We take heed to wisdom, and our foot does not stumble.
“Do not let wisdom and understanding out of your sight... Then you will go on your way in safety, and your foot will not stumble.”— Proverbs 3:21-23
We bear the weight on His shoulders.
“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”— Isaiah 9:6,
We are His eyes to see the need and His ears to hear the cry.
“The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are attentive to their cry.”— Psalm 34:15
And His eyes weep with those who weep.
“Jesus wept.”— John 11:35,
“He will wipe every tear from their eyes.”— Revelation 21:4,
Our tongue is instructed to sustain the weary.
“The Sovereign Lord has given me a well-instructed tongue, to know the word that sustains the weary.”— Isaiah 50:4
I speak for those who cannot speak.
“Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute.”— Proverbs 31:8
He has given us a new heart.
“I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.”— Ezekiel 36:26
And this is what the new heart beats for.
Jesus said, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”— Matthew 5:3-10
We are the hands and the feet of Christ. And He breathed life into us.
“Come, breath, from the four winds and breathe into these slain, that they may live... breath entered them; they came to life and stood up on their feet.”— Ezekiel 37:9-10
And underneath us are His everlasting arms.
“The eternal God is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms.”— Deuteronomy 33:27,
“Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.”— 1 Corinthians 12:27
And by the grace of God, this body will be raised new.
“But by the grace of God I am what I am.”— 1 Corinthians 15:10
“The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable; it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power; it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body.”— 1 Corinthians 15:42-44
And the Holy Spirit dwells within us.
“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?”— 1 Corinthians 6:19
And this is the fruit He bears in us.
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.”— Galatians 5:22-23
“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”— Psalm 139:14
And we are becoming Christ-like, transformed into His image.
“And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory.”— 2 Corinthians 3:18
And we armor the body.
“Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes.”— Ephesians 6:11
The helmet of salvation guards the mind. — Ephesians 6:14-17 God equips us with everything — after the armor, you are equipped with everything to fight the battle:
“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”— 2 Timothy 3:16-17
“His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.”— 2 Peter 1:3
“Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.”— Hebrews 13:21
The Armor of God
“Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes.”— Ephesians 6:11
We know who we are fighting.
“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”— Ephesians 6:12
The belt of truth is buckled around us — it holds everything together.
Jesus said, “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”— John 8:32
The breastplate of righteousness covers the heart.
“He put on righteousness as his breastplate, and the helmet of salvation on his head; he put on the garments of vengeance and wrapped himself in zeal as in a cloak.”— Isaiah 59:17
Our feet are fitted with the readiness of the gospel of peace — to carry the good news wherever we go.
“And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: 'How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!'”— Romans 10:15
The shield of faith is in our hands, to quench every flaming arrow of the evil one.
“for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.”— 1 John 5:4
The helmet of salvation guards the mind.
“But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet.”— 1 Thessalonians 5:8
And the sword of the Spirit — the word of God — is on our tongue.
“For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”— Hebrews 4:12
Prayer is what powers the armor.
“And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord's people.”— Ephesians 6:18
And this is the fight we are armed for.
“Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.”— 1 Timothy 6:12
God equips us with everything — after the armor, you are equipped with everything to fight the battle:
“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”— 2 Timothy 3:16-17
He equips our eyes to see the unseen.
“And Elisha prayed, 'Open his eyes, Lord, so that he may see.' Then the Lord opened the servant’s eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.”— 2 Kings 6:17
And this is where we fix our eyes:
“So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”— 2 Corinthians 4:18
The Lighthouse
We are called to be a lighthouse unto the people — set high, shining over the waters, showing them the dangers before they come ashore. For the people are like boats in the ocean, and the rocks are real.
Jesus said, “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”— Matthew 5:14-16
And the boats come to the light:
“Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you. See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the peoples, but the Lord rises upon you and his glory appears over you. Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn.”— Isaiah 60:1-3
And the light doesn't tend itself. As the virgins tended to their lamps, so the lighthouse keeper tends to the lamps, so that the boats may see through darkness and fog. Jesus told of the virgins:
“The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. The wise ones, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps.”— Matthew 25:3-4
“Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps.”— Matthew 25:7
The keeper's first charge:
“Do not quench the Spirit.”— 1 Thessalonians 5:19
A lighthouse does not chase the boats. It stands, it shines, and it warns. That is the watchman's charge:
“Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the people of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me.”— God, Ezekiel 33:7
For His word is the lamp that shows the rocks:
“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”— Psalm 119:105
For without the warning, boats wreck:
“holding on to faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and so have suffered shipwreck with regard to the faith.”— 1 Timothy 1:19
But when they heed the light, we pull them from the wreck:
“save others by snatching them from the fire; to others show mercy, mixed with fear—hating even the clothing stained by corrupted flesh.”— Jude 1:23
And the light turns the boat from the rocks:
“remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of their way will save them from death and cover over a multitude of sins.”— James 5:20
And He guides them to safe harbor:
“He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed. They were glad when it grew calm, and he guided them to their desired haven.”— Psalm 107:29-30
We shine, so they don't have to learn the rocks the hard way.
Air Traffic Control
As the lighthouse is to the boats, so air traffic control is to the airplanes. People are as airplanes into the skies, as boats into the water — and both need a high place watching over them, guiding them in.
“Who are these that fly along like clouds, like doves to their nests?”— Isaiah 60:8
“Go, post a lookout and have him report what he sees.”— God, Isaiah 21:6
“Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the people of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me.”— God, Ezekiel 3:17
The lookout answers:
“Day after day, my lord, I stand on the watchtower; every night I stay at my post.”— Isaiah 21:8
We stand the watch over the people, to warn them and guide them of the darkness and the evils in the world — before they happen.
“The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty.”— Proverbs 27:12
The watchman takes his stand:
“I will stand at my watch and station myself on the ramparts; I will look to see what he will say to me, and what answer I am to give to this complaint.”— Habakkuk 2:1
And when we report what we see, we report it to Christ and to the church — to help people, and to guide people to the church and to Christ, the safe haven and the safe harbor.
“They were glad when it grew calm, and he guided them to their desired haven.”— Psalm 107:30
For the watchman gives an account:
“Have confidence in your leaders and submit to their authority, because they keep watch over you as those who must give an account.”— Hebrews 13:17
And the watch never ends:
“I have posted watchmen on your walls, Jerusalem; they will never be silent day or night. You who call on the Lord, give yourselves no rest,”— God, Isaiah 62:6
And we guide them in to land — safely. The landing leads them to Christ, for He is the landing strip, lit and waiting. And the Bible is the instruction manual: how to safely guide you to Christ, and to watch out for the hidden dangers.
“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”— 2 Timothy 3:16-17
Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”— John 14:6
The control tower doesn't fly the planes. It watches, it warns, and it guides them home.
The Baited Hook and the Hidden Dangers
People are like fish — they don't know the hook is hidden beneath the bait. The devil never shows you the hook. He shows you the bait. The danger stays hidden until you bite.
Scripture says it plainly.
“You have made people like the fish in the sea, like the sea creatures that have no ruler. The wicked foe pulls all of them up with hooks, he catches them in his net, he gathers them up in his dragnet; and so he rejoices and is glad.”— Habakkuk 1:14-15
And they never see it coming.
“Moreover, no one knows when their hour will come: As fish are caught in a cruel net, or birds are taken in a snare, so people are trapped by evil times that fall unexpectedly upon them.”— Ecclesiastes 9:12
“but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.”— James 1:14-15
And this is the bait — the trappings of the world:
“Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world.”— 1 John 2:15-16
And the bait can be anything — greed, the love of money, all kinds of evil.
Jesus said, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”— Luke 12:15
“For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.”— 1 Timothy 6:10
The bait always matches the hunger. Jesus had fasted forty days, and the tempter came to him with bread:
“The tempter came to him and said, ‘If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.’”— Matthew 4:3
And the hunger the bait feeds turns the fish on each other.
“If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.”— Galatians 5:15
That is the anatomy of the hook: enticed, dragged away — then desire gives birth to sin, and sin gives birth to death. The bait looks like what you want. The hook is what it costs.
And the hook comes disguised as something good.
“And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.”— 2 Corinthians 11:14
“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.”— 1 Peter 5:8
Jesus said, “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”— Matthew 26:41
And when the hook is near, resist.
“Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”— James 4:7
Sin imprisons us. It holds us in bondage — we are bound by the hook and stuck.
Jesus said, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.”— John 8:34
“The evil deeds of the wicked ensnare them; the cords of their sins hold them fast.”— Proverbs 5:22
But some have already swallowed the hook. That is the turning point — turning away from sin and turning to Christ. The line doesn’t snap because the fish is strong. It snaps because of the strength of Christ:
“We have escaped like a bird from the fowler’s snare; the snare has been broken, and we have escaped.”— Psalm 124:7
Jesus said, “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”— John 8:36
And when the hook is in the water, God shows the way around it:
“No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.”— 1 Corinthians 10:13
See the hook before you bite the bait.
And once you are free, go catch others — for Him.
Jesus said, “Come, follow me, and I will send you out to fish for people.”— Matthew 4:19
Faith Without Works Is Dead
There is a new baited hook. Satan whispers that Jesus died on the cross for our sins, so no one has to do anything — everything is done. That is the lie.
The Question
“What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them?”— James 2:14
Dead Faith
“In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.”— James 2:17
“As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.”— James 2:26
“You see that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone.”— James 2:24
Believing Is Not Enough
“You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that — and shudder.”— James 2:19
“They claim to know God, but by their actions they deny him. They are detestable, disobedient and unfit for doing anything good.”— Titus 1:16
“We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. Whoever says, 'I know him,' but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person.”— 1 John 2:3-4
“Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.”— 1 John 2:6
“Nevertheless, God's solid foundation stands firm, sealed with this inscription: 'The Lord knows those who are his,' and, 'Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness.'”— 2 Timothy 2:19
Show Me
“But someone will say, 'You have faith; I have deeds.' Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds.”— James 2:18
Grace Is Not a License
“What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?”— Romans 6:1-2
Doing Nothing Is Sin
“If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn't do it, it is sin for them.”— James 4:17
Jesus Said Do
Jesus said, “Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.”— Matthew 7:21
Jesus said, “Why do you call me, 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say?”— Luke 6:46
Jesus said, “Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.”— John 14:12
Jesus said, “If you love me, keep my commands.”— John 14:15
Hearers and Doers
“Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.”— James 1:22
“For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God's sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous.”— Romans 2:13
By Their Fruit
Jesus said, “Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”— Matthew 7:19
Jesus said, “He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.”— John 15:2
“Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.”— Matthew 3:8
Jesus said, “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”— Matthew 5:16
Love Does
“If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.”— 1 John 3:17-18
“For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.”— Galatians 5:6
Made for This
“For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”— Ephesians 2:10
“He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”— Micah 6:8
“For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.”— 2 Peter 1:5-8
The Judgment
Jesus said, “His master replied, 'You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed? Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest. So take the bag of gold from him and give it to the one who has ten bags. For whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them. And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'”— Matthew 25:26-30
Jesus said, “The servant who knows the master's will and does not get ready or does not do what the master wants will be beaten with many blows.”— Luke 12:47
Jesus said, “He will reply, 'Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.'”— Matthew 25:45
Jesus said, “Look, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to each person according to what they have done.”— Revelation 22:12
“If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work. If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward. If it is burned up, the builder will suffer loss but yet will be saved—even though only as one escaping through the flames.”— 1 Corinthians 3:12-15
“For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due us for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.”— 2 Corinthians 5:10
“Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind. For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil.”— Ecclesiastes 12:13-14
Jesus said, “I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm — neither hot nor cold — I am about to spit you out of my mouth.”— Revelation 3:15-16
Work It Out
“Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed — not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence — continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling,”— Philippians 2:12
“and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him”— Hebrews 5:9
Believing is not enough. A faith that does nothing is a dead faith. Do the will of the Father.
Feed Them, Clothe Them, House Them
- Help me bring hope to those who cry out spiritually, mentally, emotionally, and physically.
- Help me bring light to those who are stuck in mental, spiritual, emotional, and physical darkness.
- Help me bring comfort to those who are mentally, spiritually, emotionally, and physically lost.
- And to show them a better way.
- Help me feed those who are mentally, spiritually, emotionally, and physically hungry.
- Help me to clothe those who are mentally, spiritually, emotionally, and physically naked.
- Help me see to those who are mentally, spiritually, emotionally, and physically sick.
I cannot do this alone. I will do it with the help of Father God, Jesus the Son and the Holy Spirit.
The Commission
Jesus said, “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.”— Matthew 25:35-36
“Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter — when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?”— God, Isaiah 58:6-7

Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”— Matthew 25:40
Set Apart and Set Aside to Be Sanctified
The dictionary says it plain.
- Set aside — to reserve for a purpose; to save; to put something of future use and value in a safe place. — Merriam-Webster
- Set apart — to reserve to a particular use; to separate from the rest; to make noticeable — to make outstanding. — Merriam-Webster
And the thesaurus takes it deeper.
- Set apart means devote — to keep or intend for a special purpose. Listen to what the thesaurus calls it: dedicate, reserve, allocate, earmark, consecrate — reserved for a purpose. Hallow, sanctify, bless — made holy. Save — rescued and kept. Commit, entrust, confide, bestow — handed over into trusted hands. Employ, apply, use — put to work.
- Set aside: dedicate — kept for a special purpose. Abolish — to put an end to by formal action; the old life is ended. Dump — to get rid of as useless or unwanted; the old self is discarded. Store — to put something of future use and value in a safe place; you are kept safe.
- Sanctify, as in to purge — to free from moral guilt or blemish: purge, purify, heal, cleanse, restore, amend, refine, regenerate, elevate, absolve, acquit, exonerate, clear.
- Sanctify, as in to bless — to make holy: bless, consecrate, dedicate, hallow, devote, spiritualize, commit.
The dictionary itself preaches it: to be set apart is to be sanctified.
Sanctify — What the Dictionary Says
Now the dictionary defines the word itself.
- Sanctify — to set apart to a sacred purpose or to religious use: consecrate.
“Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine, you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.”— God, Exodus 19:5-6
“Those who cleanse themselves from the latter will be instruments for special purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work.”— 2 Timothy 2:21
And the dictionary defines consecrate — the source's version, word for word:
- to induct (a person) into a permanent office with a religious rite — especially, to ordain to the office of bishop
- to make or declare sacred — especially, to devote irrevocably to the worship of God by a solemn ceremony
- to effect the liturgical transubstantiation of (eucharistic bread and wine)
- to devote to a purpose with or as if with deep solemnity or dedication
- to make inviolable or venerable
- Sanctify — to free from sin: purify.
“as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.”— Psalm 103:12
“And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.”— 1 Corinthians 6:11
And the dictionary defines purify — to make pure:
- to clear from material defilement or imperfection
- to free from guilt or moral or ceremonial blemish
- to free from undesirable elements
- Sanctify — to make productive of holiness.
“who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.”— Titus 2:14
“But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: 'Be holy, because I am holy.'”— 1 Peter 1:15-16
Purged from the guilt — then blessed into the holy.
So when God sets you aside, He reserves you. He saves you out from the rest. He separates you from the evil — and He sets you apart for His purpose. Reserved. Separated. Made to stand out. For Him.
And here is the whole sermon in one truth: there are two ways to be set apart. Your sin sets you apart FROM God. God sets you apart FROM your sin. Watch them side by side, and you will understand.
I. Set Apart Before You Were Born
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”— God, Jeremiah 1:5
“But when God, who set me apart from my mother's womb and called me by his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son in me so that I might preach him among the Gentiles, my immediate response was not to consult any human being.”— Galatians 1:15
II. Reserved to a Particular Use
“who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.”— Titus 2:14
“for you are a people holy to the LORD your God. Out of all the peoples on the face of the earth, the LORD has chosen you to be his treasured possession.”— Deuteronomy 14:2
“the people I formed for myself that they may proclaim my praise.”— God, Isaiah 43:21
“'On the day when I act,' says the LORD Almighty, 'they will be my treasured possession. I will spare them, just as a father has compassion and spares his son who serves him.'”— God, Malachi 3:17
III. Set Apart for a Specific Calling
“While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, 'Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.'”— the Holy Spirit, Acts 13:2
Jesus said, “what about the one whom the Father set apart as his very own and sent into the world? Why then do you accuse me of blasphemy because I said, 'I am God's Son'?”— John 10:36
IV. Separated from the Rest
“You are to be holy to me because I, the LORD, am holy, and I have set you apart from the nations to be my own.”— God, Leviticus 20:26
“Therefore, 'Come out from them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you.'”— God, 2 Corinthians 6:17
“It is God's will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality;”— 1 Thessalonians 4:3
“Therefore, since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.”— 2 Corinthians 7:1
“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God — this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is — his good, pleasing and perfect will.”— Romans 12:1-2
V. Made to Stand Out
“But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: 'Be holy, because I am holy.'”— 1 Peter 1:15-16
“Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord.”— Hebrews 12:14
VI. Saved and Kept
“And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.”— 1 Corinthians 6:11
“He has saved us and called us to a holy life — not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace.”— 2 Timothy 1:9
“Know that the Lord has set apart his faithful servant for himself; the Lord hears when I call to him.”— Psalm 4:3
“May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”— 1 Thessalonians 5:23
“who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit, to be obedient to Jesus Christ and sprinkled with his blood:”— 1 Peter 1:2
VII. Sanctified by the Word and the Spirit
Jesus said, “Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.”— John 17:17
Jesus said, “For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.”— John 17:19
“Consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am the LORD your God. Keep my decrees and follow them. I am the LORD, who makes you holy.”— God, Leviticus 20:7-8
“But we ought always to thank God for you, brothers and sisters loved by the Lord, because God chose you as firstfruits to be saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit and through belief in the truth.”— 2 Thessalonians 2:13
“To the church of God in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be his holy people, together with all those everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ — their Lord and ours:”— 1 Corinthians 1:2
“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.”— Ephesians 5:25-27
VIII. Made Holy by His Blood
“And so Jesus also suffered outside the city gate to make the people holy through his own blood.”— Hebrews 13:12
“And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.”— Hebrews 10:10
“Both the one who makes people holy and those who are made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters.”— Hebrews 2:11
IX. Consecrated — Set Apart by Vow
“Speak to the Israelites and say to them: 'If a man or woman wants to make a special vow, a vow of dedication to the LORD as a Nazirite,'”— God, Numbers 6:2
“Throughout the period of their dedication, they are consecrated to the LORD.”— Numbers 6:8
“Consecrate to me every firstborn male. The first offspring of every womb among the Israelites belongs to me, whether human or animal.”— God, Exodus 13:2
X. The Set-Apart Day
“Say to the Israelites, 'You must observe my Sabbaths. This will be a sign between me and you for the generations to come, so you may know that I am the LORD, who makes you holy.'”— God, Exodus 31:13
The Sabbath day was the seventh day — the day on which God rested after He created the heaven and the earth.
“By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.”— Genesis 2:2-3
And this is the day the Lord made a holy day.
XI. Our Part — Purify Yourselves
“All who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.”— 1 John 3:3
XII. Set Apart by Your Own Sin
There are two ways to be set apart. Your sin sets you apart FROM God — separated, in darkness, in chains. But God sets you apart FOR Himself — reserved, consecrated, made holy. And here is the mercy: the same prison your sin built becomes the separated place where God gets to you.
First, sin sets you apart from God.
“But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear.”— Isaiah 59:2
“At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another.”— Titus 3:3
“Some sat in darkness, in utter darkness, prisoners suffering in iron chains, because they rebelled against God's commands and despised the plans of the Most High. So he subjected them to bitter labor; they stumbled, and there was no one to help.”— Psalm 107:10-12
Then, God sets you apart FROM your sin. Not only are you separated by sin — you are set apart by God from your sin.
“as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.”— Psalm 103:12
“For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”— Colossians 1:13-14
“But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit,”— Titus 3:5
And in that separation from the world — in your moment of weakness, in your desperation, in your separation — only then can God get your attention. So when He has your attention, now you're good. With nothing left to distract you, the world goes quiet, and His whisper is the only voice left.
I know, because it happened to me. 25 years, in and out, off and on, in and out of prison — it really set me apart and set me aside. My own sin set me apart from family, set me apart from God, set me apart from anybody who loved me, and even friends, and the community. And in that separated place, in my weakness, in my desperation — God had my full attention. He got to me. I came out serving God.
And being set apart and set aside is not completely bad. Because now, you have nothing distracting you. You have nothing tempting you. You have nothing taunting you. So you're free and clear — free and clear from any of those worries. And then you really don't have to worry, because when you're set apart and set aside, God has you for His purpose.
Jesus said, “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”— John 8:36
“He says, 'Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.'”— God, Psalm 46:10
“Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.”— 1 Kings 19:11-12
“Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. He brought them out of darkness, the utter darkness, and broke away their chains.”— Psalm 107:13-14
The law itself was the setting-apart — to save you from yourself, and to save others from harm — until God got to you.
“Before the coming of this faith, we were held in custody under the law, locked up until the faith that was to come would be revealed. So the law was our guardian until Christ came that we might be justified by faith.”— Galatians 3:23-24
“You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.”— Genesis 50:20
Pulled Together
So here it is, pulled together, so you understand.
Your sin set you apart FROM God — your iniquities separated you, you sat in darkness in iron chains, enslaved by your passions, held in custody.
But God set you apart FROM your sin — He removed your transgressions as far as the east is from the west, He rescued you from the dominion of darkness and brought you into the kingdom of the Son He loves, He washed you, He sanctified you, He justified you.
The prison your sin built became the separated place. The world went quiet. The distractions died. And in your weakness, in your desperation, in your separation — God had your full attention, and His whisper was the only voice left.
Set apart by sin. Set apart by God. And this is where the setting-apart ends: once you give your life to Christ, you become a child of God.
“Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God — children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God.”— John 1:12-13
“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!”— 1 John 3:1
And it happens both at once and over a lifetime. Set apart in a moment — made holy for a lifetime.
“For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.”— Hebrews 10:14
Reserved. Separated. Made to stand out. Saved and kept. Made holy. Set apart — before you were born, and for His purpose forever.

INTERCESSOR

“Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God's throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”— Hebrews 4:14-16
“In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.”— Romans 8:26

It's like the footprints in the sand. When you're walking, but then there's only one set of footprints — that's Jesus carrying you. That's the Comforter, the Healer, the Redeemer, the Intercessor, the Savior, and the Teacher.

“Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him.”— 1 Corinthians 1:26-29

TIED TOGETHER
“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms. Amen.”— 1 Peter 4:10-11
Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”— Matthew 25:40
Preach from the Mountaintops but Not Behind Closed Doors
“But the church doors closed — anybody walking by cannot hear the word of God. Therefore they are deaf to what is going on inside the church, just as the church is blind to what is going on outside the church.”
“No man can hear what is behind closed doors.”
“So if the lost wanted to be saved — though the church sits right there — the door is closed to them, and they feel as if they're not accepted, because the doors are closed.”
“And Jesus opens all the doors. That's why He comes back — not to the closed doors, but to the streets. Not to the building, but to the people.”
THE MOUNTAINTOP — where there were no doors

THE BUILDING — the gathering is holy too

“not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”— Hebrews 10:25

THE DOORS — of the church, of the houses, of the heart
The doors of the church
“Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.”— Revelation 3:20

THE SENDING

Jesus said, “Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves.”— Luke 10:3
Jesus said, “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn't he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it?”— Luke 15:4
THE BRIDE — the closing
Jesus doesn't come back for the building. He comes back for His bride — which is the church — which are the people, not the buildings that the people are in.
“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her”— Ephesians 5:25
“and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.”— Ephesians 5:27
“Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready.”— Revelation 19:7
Tuning In — Cutting Through the Static
The spiritual antenna — and the person being able to receive the message, but only if they're paying attention, or if they're listening for God. Sometimes, like the Wi-Fi connection, you stay connected or you disconnect, depending on whether you are walking with God or whether you're walking in sin.
The Antenna — Tune In
God is always broadcasting. The signal never stops — but the antenna has to be up. You only receive the message if you're paying attention, if you're listening for God. And the tuning is active: you seek, you listen, you still yourself.
“But if from there you seek the LORD your God, you will find him if you seek him with all your heart and with all your soul.”— Deuteronomy 4:29
“Look to the LORD and his strength; seek his face always.”— 1 Chronicles 16:11

The LORD came and stood there, calling as at the other times, 'Samuel! Samuel!' Then Samuel said, 'Speak, for your servant is listening.' — 1 Samuel 3:10

“Be still, and know that I am God.”— God, Psalm 46:10,
and in the stillness the static clears.
Know His Voice
Many signals crowd the air — but the sheep know the Shepherd's voice, and they test every other spirit before they follow it.
Jesus said, “When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice.”— John 10:4
Jesus said, 'But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger's voice.' — John 10:5

“The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.”— 1 Corinthians 2:14
Connected — Walking with God
Stay connected, and the signal is strong. Walk with God, and you remain in Him — the branch in the vine, the device on the network. His words remain in you, and you remain in Him. Nothing interrupts the reception.
Jesus said, “Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.”— John 15:4
Jesus said, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”— John 15:5
Jesus said, “If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.”— John 15:7

“But you, dear friends, by building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in God's love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life.”— Jude 1:20-21
Jesus said, “But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.”— John 16:13
The Lord would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend. — Exodus 33:11
“So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.”— Galatians 5:16
“The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.”— Romans 8:6
“But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.”— 1 John 1:7
Hear and Obey — Or Refuse
Here is the dividing line. Hearing that obeys stays connected; hearing that refuses puts up the static — until the ears turn away on purpose, and the heart goes calloused, and the signal can't get through at all.
He replied, 'Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.' — Luke 11:28
“Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.”— Romans 10:17
“We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.”— Hebrews 2:1
“Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.”— James 1:22
“'When I called, they did not listen; so when they called, I would not listen,' says the LORD Almighty.”— Zechariah 7:13
“If anyone turns a deaf ear to my instruction, even their prayers are detestable.”— Proverbs 28:9
“For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.”— 2 Timothy 4:3-4
“For this people's heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them.'”— Matthew 13:15
The Whisper vs the Noise
God doesn't shout over the static — He whispers beneath it. The world is loud; He is not. Tune past the noise, and you'll find Him in the whisper, in the peace.
“After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.”— 1 Kings 19:12
“My ears had heard of you but now my eyes have seen you.”— Job 42:5
“For God is not a God of disorder but of peace—as in all the congregations of the Lord's people.”— 1 Corinthians 14:33
Disconnected — Walking in Sin
Walk in sin, and you disconnect. Not because the signal stopped — because you did. Sin puts static on the line until you can't hear Him at all.
“But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear.”— Isaiah 59:2
“If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth.”— 1 John 1:6
“And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.”— Ephesians 4:30
Reconnect
The network never went down. The signal never stopped. Reconnect — come near to God, and He will come near to you.
“Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.”— James 4:8

Equipped for Battle
Jesus said, “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.”— Luke 4:18-19
Sent to Do the Work
Now that we are equipped for battle, we go out to do the work of God.
Jesus said, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.”— Mark 16:15
And these are the signs that follow those who believe.
Jesus said, “And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues;”— Mark 16:17
He has given us authority over all the power of the enemy.
Jesus said, “I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.”— Luke 10:19
“Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.”— James 1:22
And this is how the battle ends.
“They triumphed over him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony; they did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death.”— Revelation 12:11
False Identity
We are given a new identity in Christ, but yet we constantly try to take on the identity of the world. We are created in the image of Christ. But yet with the choices we make we're taking on the identity of people, places and things. And it is aggravated — willful, deliberate — we go out and do these things in sin to take on the identity of another. I know, because aggravated identity theft was one of my charges.
The Identity He Gave You
“So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.”— Genesis 1:27
“For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”— Ephesians 2:10
“Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God.”— John 1:12-13
“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.”— 1 Peter 2:9
“I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”— Galatians 2:20
“But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ,”— Philippians 3:20
“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.”— 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
“For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”— Colossians 1:13-14
Put Off, Put On
“You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.”— Ephesians 4:22-24
“Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.”— Colossians 3:9-10
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”— Romans 12:2
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”— 2 Corinthians 5:17
“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light”— Ephesians 5:8
The Original Swap
“For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”— Genesis 3:5
Taking the World's Identity
“and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles.”— Romans 1:23
“They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.”— Romans 1:25
“But the people refused to listen to Samuel. 'No!' they said. 'We want a king over us. Then we will be like all the other nations, with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles.'”— 1 Samuel 8:19-20
“'Do not follow the crowd in doing wrong. When you give testimony in a lawsuit, do not pervert justice by siding with the crowd,'”— God, Exodus 23:2
“Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.”— Galatians 1:10
“You adulterous people, don't you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.”— James 4:4
“Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world.”— 1 John 2:15-16
Refusing the False Name
“By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh's daughter. He chose to be mistreated along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward.”— Hebrews 11:24-26
“The chief official gave them new names: to Daniel, the name Belteshazzar; to Hananiah, Shadrach; to Mishael, Meshach; and to Azariah, Abednego.”— Daniel 1:7
“But Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine, and he asked the chief official for permission not to defile himself this way.”— Daniel 1:8
The Father of the False Identity
Jesus said, “You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.”— John 8:44
“And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.”— 2 Corinthians 11:14
The True Name
“Then the man said, 'Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.'”— Genesis 32:28
“But now, this is what the LORD says— he who created you, Jacob, he who formed you, Israel: 'Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.'”— God, Isaiah 43:1
“Some will say, 'I belong to the LORD'; others will call themselves by the name of Jacob; still others will write on their hand, 'The LORD's,' and will take the name Israel.”— Isaiah 44:5
“to them I will give within my temple and its walls a memorial and a name better than sons and daughters; I will give them an everlasting name that will endure forever.”— God, Isaiah 56:5
“The nations will see your vindication, and all kings your glory; you will be called by a new name that the mouth of the LORD will bestow.”— Isaiah 62:2
“As he says in Hosea: 'I will call them 'my people' who are not my people; and I will call her 'my loved one' who is not my loved one,' and, 'In the very place where it was said to them, 'You are not my people,' there they will be called 'children of the living God.''”— God, Romans 9:25-26
Jesus said, “The son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.'”— Luke 15:21
Jesus said, “For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found. So they began to celebrate.”— Luke 15:24
Jesus said, “Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious, I will give some of the hidden manna. I will also give that person a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to the one who receives it.”— Revelation 2:17
He gave me a new name and a new identity. Just like I chose to keep using the name Moses over my original name — because the false one was never mine to carry.
— Moses
The Mirror
Why when we look in a glass mirror can we fix the reflection that we see? But when we are told about our spiritual mirror we get upset. In the mirror we fix whatever is wrong — the eyebrow, brush our teeth, move a piece of lint, a piece of hair out of place — anything that's out of place in the physical aspect, we fix in this physical mirror. But when it comes to the spiritual mirror, people get mad at the spiritual correction.
Reflection — What the Dictionary Says
Physical reflection:
- The throwing back of light, sound, or heat when it strikes a surface that does not absorb it
- Purpose: to create a visual mirror image — where left and right are reversed
- Examples: your face in a glass mirror; a tree's image on a calm lake; an echo returning a sound wave
Spiritual reflection:
- A thoughtful, internal process of introspection — examining your beliefs, experiences, actions, and your relationship with the divine
- Purpose: inner peace, clarity, wisdom, moral alignment, and spiritual growth
- Practices: meditation on sacred texts, prayer, journaling, silence, reviewing daily motives and mistakes
The physical bounces off a surface that absorbs nothing, and hands the image back reversed. The spiritual is meant to be absorbed — taken in, examined, and corrected. Two reflections. One fixes the outside. One corrects the heart.
The Physical Reflection
“Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.”— James 1:23-24
“Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight.”— 1 Peter 3:3-4
“Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.”— Proverbs 31:30
Jesus said, “When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”— Matthew 6:16-18
The Spiritual Reflection
“Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.”— James 1:22
“But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.”— James 1:25
“For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.”— Hebrews 4:12-13
“But the LORD said to Samuel, 'Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.'”— God, 1 Samuel 16:7
“As water reflects the face, so one's life reflects the heart.”— Proverbs 27:19
Jesus said, “Now then, you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness. You foolish people! Did not the one who made the outside make the inside also?”— Luke 11:39-40
Jesus said, “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean. In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.”— Matthew 23:27-28
“For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.”— 1 Corinthians 13:12
“And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.”— 2 Corinthians 3:18
“Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.”— 2 Corinthians 4:16
Mad at the Correction
“Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but whoever hates correction is stupid.”— Proverbs 12:1
“Stern discipline awaits anyone who leaves the path; the one who hates correction will die.”— Proverbs 15:10
“Mockers resent correction, so they avoid the wise.”— Proverbs 15:12
“Do not rebuke mockers or they will hate you; rebuke the wise and they will love you.”— Proverbs 9:8
“For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.”— 2 Timothy 4:3-4
Jesus said, “This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed.”— John 3:19-20
“Have I now become your enemy by telling you the truth?”— Galatians 4:16
The Friend Who Rebukes
“Better is open rebuke than hidden love. Wounds from a friend can be trusted, but an enemy multiplies kisses.”— Proverbs 27:5-6
“It is better to heed the rebuke of a wise person than to listen to the song of fools.”— Ecclesiastes 7:5
Then Nathan said to David, “You are the man!” — 2 Samuel 12:7
Jesus said, “Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent.”— Revelation 3:19
The Correction of the True Reflection
“Let a righteous man strike me—that is a kindness; let him rebuke me—that is oil on my head. My head will not refuse it, for my prayer will still be against the deeds of evildoers.”— Psalm 141:5
“Test me, LORD, and try me, examine my heart and my mind;”— Psalm 26:2
“Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the LORD.”— Lamentations 3:40
“Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you—unless, of course, you fail the test?”— 2 Corinthians 13:5
“No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.”— Hebrews 12:11
The Reflection Restored
“Then God said, 'Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.'”— God, Genesis 1:26
“For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.”— Romans 8:29
“And just as we have borne the image of the earthly man, so shall we bear the image of the heavenly man.”— 1 Corinthians 15:49
“Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.”— 1 John 3:2
“Those who look to him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame.”— Psalm 34:5
“Those who are wise will shine like the brightness of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars for ever and ever.”— Daniel 12:3
“Who is like the wise? Who knows the explanation of things? A person's wisdom brightens their face and changes its hard appearance.”— Ecclesiastes 8:1
“Yet you, LORD, are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand.”— Isaiah 64:8
“Does not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of clay some pottery for special purposes and some for common use?”— Romans 9:21
“He said, 'Can I not do with you, Israel, as this potter does?' declares the LORD. 'Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand, Israel.'”— God, Jeremiah 18:6
“But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.”— 2 Corinthians 4:7
“We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus' sake, so that his life may also be revealed in our mortal body.”— 2 Corinthians 4:10-11
The man in the mirror — the man standing in front of the mirror is real. But what's in the mirror is a reflection of what is wrong with the man that is real. The man in the mirror needs to change his ways, for his reflection shows differently. Man's inner spirit needs to reflect God. Not himself. And man's outer person needs to reflect God's inner spirit through flesh.
Fix the man, not the mirror. Fix the spirit of man.

“We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf. He has become a high priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.”
Hebrews 6:19–20 (NIV)
